Baker Barracks

Baker Barracks at Thorney Island houses over a thousand soldiers and their families. To accommodate three new arms cotes and as part of the Regular Army Basing Plan, the site needed to expand and refurbish its infrastructure.

Working with the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), a Kier Graham Ltd joint venture won a project tendered through the Defence Infrastructure Framework for the reconfiguration and refurbishment of numerous buildings to accommodate the increase of personnel.

The project included one new build and six refurbishment projects, including the reconfigurations of hangars, garages and training wing buildings. Works would take place in a live military camp and it was critical that construction did not impact daily operations.

Our dedicated and security cleared project team worked closely with the customer to deliver the programme without impacting on daily operations. The project was delivered on time and within budget, achieving an excellent Considerate Constructors Scheme scoring.

As part of our corporate social responsibility, the project team also embarked on a community engagement project to transform an on-site welfare centre for forces families. The client received approximately £17k worth of work at no cost, the Kier team and subcontractors gave 480 hours of time and materials were either donated or funded through the Kier Foundation or local fundraising efforts.

We delivered the infrastructure upgrades at Thorney Island to an excellent standard, meeting all delivery milestones and enhancing the capability of this MoD Facility.

Through refurbishing the community centre at no cost to the client, we transformed an almost derelict area into a vibrant facility for soldier and their families to enjoy. The impact of this community project was recognised at the Construction News Awards 2018, where we were selected as a finalist for Community Engagement Project of the Year.
