HMP Millsike is an example of a new, collaborative future for construction. The first prison being delivered by the Alliance 4 New Prisons (A4NP), the project sees Kier, ISG, Laing O’Rourke and Wates pooling their expertise and resources to deliver a contemporary, innovative construction solution which aligns with the government’s 2050 net zero carbon commitments. The Millsike project will be the first of the four to be delivered as part of the Ministry of Justice’s New Prison Programme and will open in 2025.

Led by Kier, the digital construction process provides a trackable and accurate build process throughout delivery – from design and manufacture and through to installation. Digital platform Ynomia is used to generate a 3D digital twin to visualise every component, ensuring the use and performance of every component is monitored accuracy not just during construction, but throughout the asset’s life cycle. The result will be an all-electric prison – the UK’s first – with more than 8,500kwh of renewable energy being generated to power it and the building fabric energy loss 10% of that of a 1970s facility.

The combined expertise of the A4NP will provide a design and construction solution which focuses on efficiency and sustainability, and which is repeatable across all four sites. This standardised approach incorporates modern methods of construction, using precast concrete to reduce materials and waste and delivering much of the build off site. The MMC process is digitally monitored throughout, with regular adaptation possible at Millsike and in the future to ensure A4NP delivers facilities of the highest quality.
