Kier Transportation’s highways business has become the first in the highways infrastructure sector to achieve the advancing tier of the Carbon Trust’s Route to Net Zero Standard.

The Carbon Trust’s Route to Net Zero Standard is an independent assessment of an organisation’s steps towards achieving net zero.

To achieve this, Kier’s highways business was assessed across its governance, implementation, measurement and stakeholder engagement processes and activities, backed up with three years of data.

"We take environmental sustainability and reaching net zero incredibly seriously. Our ambitious carbon reduction targets as a business are aligned with climate science - and are in place so that our response to the climate crisis is robust and well managed, in order to protect our people, our places and our planet.

The Carbon Trust works with organisations to measure and manage their emissions, inform carbon reduction strategies, and align targets for the future.

"With the implementation of our One Planet Approach, and the Carbon Trust’s support in verifying our reductions, we are making great progress to cut carbon across our operations. We are committed to continuing our work in this area, and engaging with our clients and supply chain to make a positive impact with the works we do and the wider sector.”

Matt Tompsett, head of environment and sustainability at Kier Transportation

“The Route to Net Zero Standard verifies carbon reductions, guides organisations towards decarbonisation and supports the communication of progress. We are delighted that Kier Highways have been certified to the Advancing tier and we look forward to supporting them further on their journey to Net Zero.”

Sam Lloyd, Sector Lead for Construction, Property and Infrastructure at the Carbon Trust

This achievement follows Kier Transportation’s Highways service having its near-term, long-term and net zero targets validated by the UN-backed Science Based Targets Initiative in June 2023. This included achieving net zero for Scope 1, 2 by 2039 and Scope 3 emissions by 2045. Kier has also had its Group-Wide targets verified.

In November of last year, Kier Transportation, including both its Highways and Rail operations, also received BSI’s PAS 2080 verification - the leading standard for carbon management solutions in buildings and infrastructure. This standard looks at the whole value chain, aiming to reduce carbon and reduce cost through more intelligent design, construction and use.

Kier Transportation will now work towards expanding its reduction efforts across the whole of its Transportation business, in line with its targets.
