Kier has completed construction of a new surgical centre at NHS Golden Jubilee in Clydebank, increasing the hospital’s patient capacity and enabling the treatment of thousands of people waiting to access important care and procedures.

Scottish First Minister, John Swinney, visited the project to mark the significant milestone in the hospital’s expansion and open the centre.

Kier has built the surgical centre on behalf of NHS Golden Jubilee and worked closely with the hospital and the Scottish Government to deliver a range of first-class facilities that will help the hospital meet the growing demand for key elective specialties.

The centre was developed with input from patients and staff, and enhances the hospital’s capacity for general and orthopaedic surgery, diagnostic procedures and endoscopy. It will also increase staff training opportunities.

The modern new facilities include five state-of-the-art orthopaedic theatres, a central sterilising and processing department, and five endoscopy procedure rooms – two of which are equipped with specialist training equipment for the NHS Scotland Academy, and an endoscopy decontamination unit.

Modern Methods of Construction were used to deliver the project efficiently, and the concrete frame and brick-clad façade were manufactured completely off-site, reducing construction time.

"I am delighted to see NHS Golden Jubilee’s new Surgical Centre open and treating patients. This state-of-the-art facility represents a significant leap forward in Scotland’s healthcare infrastructure, helping to meet the growing demand for key elective specialties. The collaboration between NHS Golden Jubilee, Kier and the Scottish Government has been fantastic, and the innovative construction methods used have set a new standard for efficiency and quality."

Phil McDowell, regional director at Kier Construction North & Scotland

“As a national hospital, NHS Golden Jubilee is proud to support the increasing demand for planned care services throughout Scotland.

“With the addition of new theatres for orthopaedic surgeries and a dedicated endoscopy unit, we are prepared to treat thousands more patients who are waiting for hip and knee replacements as well as diagnostic procedures. This expansion will not only improve patient care but also significantly enhance staff training opportunities and clinical excellence.

“Following extensive collaboration with patients, staff, and third-sector partners, we are delighted to announce our new centre is open, providing outstanding care and innovative treatment options for patients across the country.”

Gordon James, Chief Executive of NHS Golden Jubilee

The project was procured through Frameworks Scotland 2 and is the second phase of the Golden Jubilee’s expansion plans. During the first phase, Kier successfully delivered the state-of-the-art eye centre. It began treating patients in November 2020 and features six purpose-built twin theatres, integrated outpatient and diagnostic facilities.
