We are committed to addressing the skills shortage in the construction industry by inspiring the next generation to consider careers in this vital field. We know that construction isn’t always seen as the first choice for schoolchildren when they think about their future careers, and we’re determined to change that perception.
In FY24 we engaged with c.24,000 students to promote careers within the construction industry via careers fairs, site visits and through the use of our Kierriculum resources.
To make this a reality, we’ve developed Kierriculum—a comprehensive educational resource designed to show students just how exciting and rewarding a career in construction can be. Kierriculum is a fun and practical tool that demonstrates how school subjects directly relate to the construction industry, making it more accessible and appealing to young people.
We’ve designed Kierriculum to be versatile and easy to use, offering a range of resources for students aged 4 to 18, covering key stages 1 through 5. Each session is thoughtfully planned and ready to be delivered in schools, ensuring that teachers, parents, or even our own Kier colleagues can effectively introduce construction-related tasks linked to school subjects.
Our resource pack includes detailed lesson plans, timings, and worksheets, along with a list of any additional materials needed to deliver each session. We’ve organised the content into categories tailored to different educational stages, including Early Years, Primary (Key Stage 1 and 2), Secondary (Key Stage 3 and 4), and College (Key Stage 5).
Kierriculum in action
We’re partnering with Hounslow Council to deliver a Kierriculum programme in Majory Kinnon School – one of the largest SEND schools in the country. Year 11 students attended a workshop about construction careers in July 24. More students will have the opportunity to take part in a full six-week Kierriculum programme, where students will also get the opportunity to visit live construction sites in late autumn 2024.
