Our Transportation division (formerly Kier Highways) has certified reductions in the environmental impact of their operations and supply chain to achieve the carbon trust standard.

CDP is a global disclosure system working to improve corporate awareness and management of carbon and climate change risk. Kier disclose to CDP annually, scoring a B in our most recent scored disclosure (2023).

Our Construction division is a business champion on CO2nstructZero, a Construction Leadership Council (CLC) initiative, bringing people together to consolidate collective actions and plans for the sector.

Contractors Declare is public declaration of our climate and ecological crises and a commitment to take positive action.

EV100 is a global initiative influencing demand and policy, accelerating a transition to electric vehicles (EVs). As a member, Kier have committed to switch our owned / contracted fleets up to 7.5t to EVs by 2030.

We obtained third party verification of our FY23 organisational carbon management and reported carbon footprint for the first time to ISO 14064.

Kier operations are certified to PAS 2080, showing that our processes are contributing to reducing lifecycle carbon emissions from our buildings and infrastructure projects.

Race To Zero is a global campaign to build momentum around the shift to a decarbonised economy. As a member, Kier have pledged to reach net zero ahead of 2050, with interim targets for 2030.

SBTi support decarbonisation by validating that company targets are aligned with the Paris Agreement and the latest climate science. Kier validated our targets in 2024, achieving net zero for scope 1 and 2 by 2039 and scope 3 by 2045.

Environmental

Kier is certified to ISO 14001, demonstrating an effective environmental management system across our business.

People

The Armed Forces Covenant works to ensure that those who serve or have served in the armed forces, and their families, are treated fairly. As a signatory, Kier pledges to treat these individuals with fairness and respect.

The Care Leaver Covenant is a national inclusion programme that supports care leavers aged 16-25 to live independently. As a signatory, we commit to provide additional support for those leaving care.

CITB is the industry training board for the construction sector in England, Scotland and Wales. They help the construction industry attract talent and to support skills development.

Disability Confident works to increase levels of employment for people with disabilities. Kier Highways was the first UK company in the construction and build sector to become a Disability Confident Leader in 2019.

The Employers Domestic Abuse Covenant is a pledge by businesses to support women affected by abuse to enter or re-enter the workplace.

The SCSS People Matter Charter helps organisations address diversity, exploitation, wellbeing, employment conditions, and training & skills. As a signatory we are committed to embedding the charter in Kier.

STEM Ambassador Programme delivers a life-changing impact for young people in classrooms and communities. STEM subjects are brought to life by over 37,000 volunteers, available across the UK, all free of charge. 

The 5% club helps increase the number, quality, and range of earn & learn opportunities in the UK. As a member, we aim to achieve 5% of our workforce in earn & learn positions, e.g. apprentices and graduates.

Kier is a gold partner to Women Into Construction, which works to promote gender equality in construction, providing support to women and assisting contractors to create a more gender-equal workforce.

Group Procurement & Kier Transportation are listed on the CIPS Corporate Ethics Register, this which demonstrates our commitment to ethical sourcing and supplier management.

Social value

The SVQM works to raise the business standards in the UK to become more ethical, sustainable, and community focussed. In 2024, Kier Transportation achieved a construction and infrastructure industry first by being awarded Gold accreditation. 

Sustainability

The Considerate Constructors Scheme is an independently run organisation supporting and guiding positive change in the construction industry. Kier has been a partner since 2008. 

Kier is a corporate member of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA), working in partnership on sustainability standards, driving understanding and uptake of sustainability skills.

The Supply Chain Sustainability School is a learning environment, upskilling those working within or aspiring to work within the built environment sector. Kier are a founding partner of the Supply Chain Sustainability School with board membership.
